Whats Up Wednesday

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the United Active Living community in Garrison Green SW  Calgary; another organization doing exceptional work for Seniors.

One of its unique and outstanding qualities is that this community recognizes the value and impact of the Arts in enriching the lives of their residents. A lover myself of the Arts, and seeing first hand the impact it has had on my students I have taught over the years, I was eager to see how this was applied in Senior living communities.

Just a few steps inside the door, and it’s easy to realize that Garrison Green is a very unique place. The residence itself is decorated with art work showcased by their very own residents which they create in their art studio. This studio is staffed by professional artists seven days a week. What better way to nourish creativity and explore the world of art and fine craft not only by drawing from residents’ lifelong creative as well as introducing new art mediums and techniques. Beyond the studio is an offering of a wide range of arts programming including independent art practice, creative workshops,  drama, theatre, music and educational programs to support life long learning. Their partnerships with Mount Royal, St. Mary’s University and a variety of musical and theatrical groups within the community keep their programming vibrant, current, and provide opportunities for their residents to engage in new ideas and keep brains sharp.

I also can’t forget to mention their resident bunny Gigi, who resides in the art studio bringing a steady supply of joy and bunny love to the residents.

Bravo to this vibrant Senior community in Calgary doing such great work!!
