We all know the importance and benefits of staying active. Walking is the universal exercise we all can enjoy. It’s low impact, excellent for overall wellness, and requires basically no equipment. planning, or preparation. Lace up a pair of comfortable shoes and away you go!
Unfortunately walking in Calgary during the winter months with the chances of slipping and falling can be downright dangerous for anyone and certainly for seniors; not to mention the below zero temperatures make it more of a chore to brave the elements than a pleasure.
I recently visited a community in the south east part of the city. One of the amenities they had in their senior community was an indoor walking track.
What a brilliant idea!!!
Here seniors can participate in active living in a safe environment without fear of slipping on snow or ice in the winter.
At the start of the route is a giant abacus to keep track of your laps. 8 laps is equivalent to a kilometre. Along the circuit are places to rest or perhaps sit and visit with another walking friend.
What a great way to encourage active living and social connectedness.
Bravo!!
