Leaving a Legacy
What if you were able to give something away and in return create a legacy that would live on long past your lifetime?
A recent client of Soft Landings had a wonderful electric piano for sale. We tried to sell the piano prior to her estate sale but had no luck. The day of the estate sale people inquired about the piano; some even played it but no one bought it! Later that day a man approached me and said, “I have to buy this piano; it’s intended for me and my grandson”.
He then went on to share his story….
“As a long time ski partner and friend of my client’s late husband, Leo we shared many memories together. He was an avid skier into his late 80s and was an inspiration to all. His passion was skiing and teaching youngsters how to ski including my grandson was also at the top of his list of favourite things to do. Tradition was that after a day of skiing we would meet and enjoy a hot chocolate together prior to heading home. On one of our last ski days together while sipping hot chocolate, the topic of pianos came up. I was sharing about my grandson’s evident talent of piano playing and how I had hoped to buy a piano for him to continue to encourage him. Leo quickly responded and said, “Don’t buy a piano, wait. I know exactly what piano is the best one to have and soon you will be able to buy it.” Not long after, Leo passed away and I had not thought much more about our conversation that day. A year later, here I am at this estate sale only to realize whose sale this was, Leo’s. When I walked in and saw this piano his words flooded my memory and my eyes filled with tears. This was the piano Leo spoke of and somehow he knew it would be the perfect match for my grandson and that one day I would buy it. Today is the day and I have to have it.”
The next day the gentleman came back for the piano and brought his grandson with him. Much to everyone’s delight the grandson sat beside Leo’s widowed wife and played some pieces for her. The music filled the room and the ending was perfect. The piano now had a new home and Leo’s picture sits atop of it. Yes, it’s legacy carries on.
Our homes are full of items that hold treasured memories of days passed on along with the loved ones associated with them. Knowing that these items live on, are enjoyed and used in the lives of others is a legacy one just can’t imagine or measure.
