Seniors’ Week

Today was the kick off to Seniors’ Week!

Seniors’ Week has been recognized since 1986. It is a week of celebrations and recognition of the contributions Seniors make to enhance the quality of life in Alberta.

The province-wide Seniors’ Week was inspired by the vision of the late Alice Modin. More than 30 years ago, Modin began a campaign to start a seniors’ day in Strathcona County that helped pave the way for Seniors’ Week.

Each year, organizations hold events in communities throughout the province to show their support for seniors by declaring Seniors’ Week locally.

Whether you have a Senior in your family or know of a Senior in your neighbourhood, we all can find a way to celebrate their lives and contributions they make in our communities.

Below is a list of ideas of ways you could show appreciation and recognition for Seniors this week.

* Spend time with senior family members or friends by taking them to a favorite restaurant, movie or other place they enjoy.
* Make a video of an interview with a senior family member. You will learn a lot about their life story and have it to share with other family members.
*Volunteer your time at a nursing home or an assisted living facility. Many Seniors would love to have someone to have lunch with them, sit and chat or read them a favorite book.
* Cook a delicious meal, deliver it in person and share the special dinner together.
* Prepare several home-cooked meals for a Senior in your neighborhood. Package them in freezer containers with directions on how to reheat them.
* If you have a Senior in your neighborhood, offer a helping hand by doing yard work, mowing his lawn or washing his car.
* Bake some cookies and bring them to Seniors in your community.
* Send a greeting card or an e-card to your favourite Senior.

Soft Landings wishes all of our Seniors a very happy Seniors’ Week and thank-you again for your many contributions which enrich the lives of all of us.
