It’s very difficult thinking about moving; all the planning, energy required, home full of a lifetime of memories, less independence, and other inevitable changes. As a senior, the task of moving can seem insurmountable. If your family and friends are unable to help, it can seem totally impossible.
So how do you decide whether it’s the right time for you or your loved ones to move?
Here are a few things to consider in making your decision:
- Home Maintenance: A home or apartment that once was once enjoyable to maintain but is now a chore, and it is just no longer fun to care for. Your home needing attention can indicate that you or your loved ones may not have the physical capacity to clean up enjoy the upkeep anymore.
- Personal Care: When laundry, clothing, and basic personal care is hard to keep up with and manage it may indicate to you or your loved ones that they may not be able to take care of themselves as much as is necessary. Perhaps there are also physically challenges or worry of injury completing some of these tasks alone.
- Feelings of Isolation: We live in a fast-paced society where busyness seems to be a virtue. If you or your loved ones have increasing feelings of isolation, perhaps as a result of loss of friends, spouse, and family this can leave a person feeling unsupported and isolated. Extended family may live far away and seniors do not want to burden their loved ones with requests for visits and help. This can lead to great loneliness and feelings of isolation.
- Declining Health: As we age we develop more conditions which make it more difficult and in many cases unsafe to live alone.
If you or your loved ones can identify with some of the above listed considerations it may be wise to consider a move.
